The Energy Citizens cpomany picnic in Houston yesterday was a good first look at corporations trying to message as grassroots. 35- to 40 buses of energy cpomany employees treated to a paid half day off, free lunch, as a protest against cap and trade. Interviews with Natural gas engineers came up with gems like ” waxman marky is not strong enough, its full of give away’s for coal plants.”Security refused entrance to all non- ticket bearing attendees, even the ones that found out about it on freedomworks.org or via email invites. This was corporate messaging cloaked as community speak in its most blatant form. I loved the line up of chauffeured limos, town cars and Ferrari’s among signs that global warming legislation was going to cost to much money. Most of the attendees interviewed didn’t seem to have much of an idea why they were there at all.
